Gilleleje
In Sjælland northwest coast you can see summerhouse
communities. You will also find Gilleleje. It
was a small fishing community.
Nowadays Gilleleje becomes very popular because European love its woods
and its fine and sandy beaches. It was a
favorite getaway of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. The old part of town is good
for a walk.
Køge
Køge is situated 40 kilometers ( 24 miles ) south of
Copenhagen. This well-preserved medieval town used to be a witch hunting
town. In the Køge Museum , a
17th-century merchant’s house, you will see souvenirs from Hans Christian
Andersen, costumes, local artifacts, an executioner’s sword, and a 13th-century
stone font, a 16th-century silver coins from a buried treasure of more than
2,000 coins found in the courtyard of Langkildes Gård. Nørregade 4, telephone
53/65-02-62. Admission : DKr10 adults, DKr5 children. It opens in September –
May on weekdays from 2 pm to 5 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 5 pm.
In June – August daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
Køge Kunst Museet Skitsesamling ( Køge Art Museum)
This art museum has changing exhibitions and an extensive
permanent collection of Queen Margrethe’s artistic works. Among them : silver
spoons designed for Georg Jensen and porcelain figures for Royal Copenhagen,
embroidery, watercolor paintings, and sketches. It is on Nørregade 29,
telephone 53/66-24-14. Admission : DKr15
adults, children free. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm.
Højerup Kirke ( Church )
This church has been
restored and the cliffs below bolstered by masonry to prevent damage from
erosion. It is on Højerup Church, Stevns
Klint, no telephone. Admission DKr5 adults, children free. It opens daily from
April to September from 11 am to 5 pm.
Stege
Stege is the Møn’s capital. However , you can still enjoy
other towns in this island such as Elmelunde, Keldby and Fanefjord which are
famous for their naive frescoes.
Nyord
Nyord is connected to Møn by Route 59. This tiny island has
a sanctuary for rare birds, including hen harriers, rough-legged buzzards, and
snow buntings. Nyord has been divided among the same 20 farms, unchanged, for
the past 300 years. Cars are not allowed in the island’s central town.
Bogø
Bogø is to tho the southwest of Nyord. This island has
remain the same for the past several centuries and is inhabited by only a few
families who continue to farm and sail.
Falster
This island is accessible from Bogø directly on the E47’s
striking Farø Bridge. Shaped like a tiney South America, the island has
excellent blond beaches.
Lolland
To the west on the E47 is the island of Lolland. It has a
history going back more than 1,000 years to when a man named Saxe sat at the
mouth of the fjord and collected atolls. He later cleared the surrounding land
and leased it. It became known as Saxtorp.
Sakskøbing
The capital of Lolland is Sakskøbing. You can visit an excellent car museum here in
the 13th century Alholm Slot ( castle ) with more than 240 vehicles and a water
tower with a smiling face. It is on Parkvej 7, Nysted, telephone 53/87-15-09.
Admissions to car museum : DKr40 adults, DKr20 children. It opens from
mid-April to May and early September to mid-October, weekend and holidays, June
to August daily from 11 am to 5 pm.
